This is your opportunity to experience all the gems of Mahurangi West, the new trails set up in the regional park at Te Muri, and the coastal walk from Sullivans Bay north to Opahi Bay. The picturesque bays and headlands of Mahurangi Harbour, commanding views of the Hauraki Gulf and a rich vein of Maori and early settler history make this a popular walk.
We set off from Opahi Bay, warming up with a couple of climbs and a ramble across Mita Bay. Then we descend to Sullivans Bay.
Ascending again we head for Cudlip Point. This is a small out and back, or you can take a relaxing if you prefer! Then we walk down to the Te Muri stream which we ford - the tide will be low but expect to get your feet wet feet so bring a towel. We do a circuit of the new tracks including a climb to the trig point where on a clear day you can see across the gulf to Coromandel and Great Barrier Island. We will also detour down to the Puhoi River with views across to Wenderholm.
Then it’s back to Sullivan’s Bay where we finish. Bring your togs and take the opportuniy to cool off with a swim to finish. Or laze under the Pohutukawa trees.
We'll take our time and enjoy the views, and stop for snacks, lunch and stories along the way – there's no rush.
On this walk there are some stretches of uneven ground across paddocks, a shingle slope and a couple of steep hills to negotiate.
This walk has great variety of beaches, headlands, bush and stunning vistas so we'll look forward to showing you around.
